This part of my site covers my professional work as an engineer.
I’m trained as a mechanical engineer, with an emphasis on mechatronics. Mechatronics people usually build things with significant mechanical, electrical and software elements, often tightly integrated together. In school, I built solar powered cars and raced them all over the world.
I’ve since been involved in several industries. Right out of graduate school, I worked for four years on social robotics and HCI (human computer interaction) at a research company. For three years after that, I worked at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in an internal consulting group, building instruments for researchers in a wide variety of scientific fields. LBL, in turn, became a springboard for co-founding a company building nano-technology tools. Finally, in the last two years, I’ve been involved in the medical device industry.
Along the way I’ve managed many small groups, done fundraising from both the government and venture/angel sources, been a key member of two startups, gotten deeply into patent and IP issues and just generally become familiar with all that it takes to nurture and grow a small organization. |
